First Ladies’ Watch Collection: Bremont’s Solo-32 Watch

Mother’s Day, May 8, is right around the corner, and many watch aficionados are looking to express their appreciation to moms, wives, sisters, and other important ladies with a well-chosen timepiece. Between now and the big day, we will showcase some notable ladies’ watches we’ve discovered at this year’s watch fairs. Today we put the spotlight on an entirely new collection from British watch brand Bremont, the Bremont Solo-32.

So how does a brand like Bremont — named after a WWII pilot and known in the watch community for its decidedly masculine associations with aviation, military history, and both airborne and seafaring adventures — cater to the ladies while still remaining true to its core identity? By taking their inspiration from a pair of remarkable women in England’s proud aviation history.

One of the two models in the collection, which launched at Baselworld 2016 in March, is the Bremont Solo-32 AJ; the initials are for Amy Johnson, a pioneering female pilot renowned for flying her DH-60 Gypsy Moth from England to Australia in 1930, and a childhood hero to brand founders (and pilots) Nick and Giles English. The watch, the more modernist of the two, has applied nickel Arabic numerals at 3, 9, and 12 o’clock and nickel dot indices for the remaining hours, as well as a date window at 6 o’clock. It is available with either a white dial with blued steel hands or a black dial with polished nickel hands.

The other new watch, the Bremont Solo-32 LC, gets its initials from another remarkable female flyer from the U.K’s history: Lettice Curtis, who flew a wide range of military combat aircraft during World War II with the Air Transport Auxiliary and who was the first woman to qualify to fly a four-engine bomber. Its dial has a more classical look, with printed Roman numerals and indices and blued steel hands sweeping across the white dial. A date window at 6 o’clock appears on this Bremont featured  brand watch as well.

All of the Solo-32 watches have 32-mm-diameter cases, made of polished stainless steel that has undergone a hardening treatment similar to the one applied to the brand’s core (men’s) collection. The process, used in the aerospace industry, imparts a high level of hardness, toughness, and impact resistance to the case, which also boasts a hardened sapphire crystal that has nine layers of nonreflective coating on each surface. Also like the Bremont men’s watches, these cases are constructed in the brand’s three-part “Trip-Tick” style, which will allow for possible combinations of case materials in future models.

Ticking beneath the solid steel caseback, held fast by six screws, is the mechanical BE-10AE movement, which features automatic winding, a COSC chronometer certification, a frequency of 28,800 vph, and a power reserve of 40 hours. The Bremont Solo-32 watches are available on a variety of leather strap styles with polished pin buckles as well as on an integrated stainless steel bracelet. All three of the models shown here carry a retail price of $4,095.
