Fratello Friday – Top 5 Interesting Pre-Owned Watches Under $4000 USD 0Posted by Robert-Jan Broer on

Every week I deliver a list of watches to our partners over at WatchTime. Today’s list is a Top 5 of interesting watches that can be had under $4000.- USD in the pre-owned market, excluding vintage timepieces. I defined it as 25 years or older.

Perhaps my number 1 choice is a bit ‘dull’, but the Rolex Datejust is a true classic no matter what. I consider it to be the mother of all modern wrist watches. I can imagine that when Rolex introduced the Datejust in the mid-1940s, it must have been a jaw-dropping timepiece as it looked very different from existing watch models (round classic shape, small or tear-drop lugs, mainly on leather straps) as the fat lugs – for that time- and steel bracelet almost made it look like an integrated thing. Only later on we would see that bracelets could be even more integrated such as on the Patek Philippe Nautilus and Audemars Piguet Royal Oak.

So, the Rolex Datejust is number one on that list. An interesting purchase for under $4000.- USD. I selected this all-steel reference 16200 from the HQ Milton website but it might be possible to find a nice reference 16234 as well (white gold fluted bezel).

Some of these watches have been out of production (GP and LW) for quite a while or being succeeded with a newer version (Sinn and Rolex). Only the Cartier Santos 100 is still available, in a large and medium version.
