Chic Countdown: Piaget Altiplano Chronograph
Swiss watchmaker and jeweller Piaget has made yet another splash in the ultra-thin field at the SIHH 2015 with the Piaget Altiplano Chronograph. This new watch is now the world double record holder for slimmest manual-winding flyback chronograph movement (in-house calibre 883P at 4.65mm thick) and slimmest case (8.24mm thick). In fact, this complication is entirely new to the 21st century classical Altiplano family.
To make this an ultra-thin proposition, many components of the movement were specially built, including the chronograph gear finger, barrel staff and the cannon-pinnion. We are certain that other than these, which are the only parts Piaget specifically lists, many other elements of the vertically coupled column wheel chronograph are brand new.
Dial-side, the chronograph looks deceptively conventional, with a tri-compax layout featuring small seconds at 6 o’clock and 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and 24-hour second time zone indicator at 9 o’clock. The 41mm diameter watch will be available in 18k pink gold and 18k white gold, with diamonds on the bezel.
